As a fitness professional I get asked time and time again... "How do I get rid of my belly fat?" OR "What are ways I can target my belly fat?" It drives me absolutley CRAZY!
I can't blame my clients for wanting a nice set of toned abs, however, I can blame the slimy fitness and supplement companies for putting false information out there for people to fall for.
We all see it on a daily basis...
"Buy this detox tea, it will shrink your belly fat over night!"
Or my personal favorite...
"Rub ginger, coconut oil and orange peels on your stomach and then plastic wrap yourself for 15 minutes and WAH-LAH! All your fat is gone!"
Im sorry to break it to you folks but those are without a doubt complete myths. Our bodies don't work like that and if they did, don't you think everyone would be completely shredded by now?
One of the biggest misconceptions in the fitness industry is that you can target fat. Fat targeting was created by fitness marketing professionals as a way to sell you on their gimmicks. And guess what? It's working! In todays society everyone is looking for the easy way out. They are looking for the fastest results for the smallest amount of effort.
Now, with that being said, there are a few ways that you CAN shrink that belly fat. But before we get there, it's best to understand how fat loss works. You lose weight by burning more calories than you consume...it's that simple. When you are burning more than you consume we call that a "calorie deficit".
There are many different tips and tricks to putting yourself in a caloric deficit but we will save that for another post.
Putting yourself in a caloric deficit is the only way you are going to lose weight and shrink fat. When your body runs out of calories to burn, it turns to your previously stored energy... aka FAT (for the most part).
Doing this over and over and over is how you are going to eventually notice fat loss! Now don't get me wrong, this doesn't mean all this fat is being taken from your stomach region. This is when genetics play a role. Look around, all of our bodies are shaped differently. Some people carry fat in the stomach area, some carry it in their legs and if you're one of the lucky women out there, you carry it in your chest and butt!
Similarly, genetics also determine where exactly the fat is pulled from throughout your body. Some believe fat is proportional pulled throughout your body but we aren't entirely sure yet.
So now what? You have stomach fat, all the products are a myth, your body choses where fat is pulled and you're out of luck...
Not exactly, there are a few ways you can change the appearance of your belly area!
1) Consistently put yourself in a caloric deficit and put in some hours in the gym!
2) Quit doing medicine ball twists and other weight oblique exercises! All this does is put muscle onto your sides and gives you a thicker look!
3) Focus on strengthening you abdominals! Focusing directly on your abs will give your belly section a tight and toned appearance and combining that with good eating habits is the best equation! And please dont say "Yeah, but I dont wan't super bulky abs or a shredded six pack!" I promise you there is so much more to that and to this day some of the most fit people out there struggle getting and maintaining a solid six pack!
Well thats it for today! Ill keep posting these periodically so please let me know if you guys have any health/fitness related topics you would like me to write about!
